Franciscan Third Order
The Secular Franciscan Order (OFS), also known as the Franciscan Third Order, is a lay branch of the Franciscan family dedicated to living the Gospel through the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi. Emphasizing humility, simplicity, and service, members integrate Franciscan spirituality into their daily lives.
Established on April 13, 2016, during the tenure of Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Joachim Fernandes and under the guidance of Province Head Rev. Fr. Manohar DSouza, the Secular Franciscan Third Order unit at Kelarai Church began with 15 founding members who took their oath and received the Scapular. In June 2018, the unit received official recognition from the Bishop of the Mangalore Diocese.
Under the leadership of Province Head Rev. Fr. Alwin Monteiro, the unit expanded, welcoming an additional 13 members by April 2018. Today, Fr. Prakash Lobo leads the unit as Province Head.
Monthly meetings, held on the second Sunday after the first Mass, foster community and spiritual growth among members. The unit actively engages in charitable initiatives, including visiting the homes of deceased parishioners, supporting church feasts, providing financial aid to disadvantaged families and cancer patients, and visiting and assisting Ashrams.
Every October, the unit celebrates its feast, commemorating its founding and renewing its commitment to Franciscan ideals. Office bearers include President Gladys Colaco, Vice President Lancy Menezes, Secretary Florin Vas, and Representatives Mr. Robert Monteiro and Mrs. Quintilia Colaco.
Through these efforts, the Secular Franciscan Third Order at Kelarai Church embodies Franciscan values of humility, simplicity, and compassion, enriching the community through dedicated service and spiritual devotion.
