Fatima Sisters: A Brief History and Mission
History: The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima was founded by Msgr. Francis Xavier Kroot, MHM, on 8th February 1893 in Bellary, Karnataka. Born in Holland on 7th December 1854, Msgr. Kroot arrived in India on 8th August 1878 with a vision to establish an Indian congregation of women dedicated to missionary work, particularly for the less fortunate and underprivileged.
The congregation faced many challenges after the early loss of their founder. To support growth and development, Mother Stanislaus, the Superior General, sought permission to move the Novitiate and Generalate to Paona. With the approval of Rev. Bishop Andrew of Pune, the congregation's name was changed to "Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima" to reflect the growing devotion to Our Lady and the spirit of their mission. Today, the congregation has expanded across India and Germany.
Charism and Apostolate: The charism of the Sisters is to live a life of prayer and penance while engaging in works of charity. They remain faithful to the vision of their founder and the message of Fatima. Their apostolic work includes catechesis, education, healthcare, and responding to the needs of the time.
Origin of Arogya Matha Kendra: Arogya Matha Kendra was established in 1986 in Neermarga, near Mangalore, thanks to a generous land donation by Mr. Boniface D'Souza. His vision was to create a home for the aged, where elderly individuals could spend their later years in peace. The project was supported by Bishop Basil D'Souza of Mangalore, who invited the Fatima Sisters to bring this dream to life.
The Kendra focuses solely on caring for the elderly, providing full-time care and ensuring their overall well-being. Currently, there are 16 residents, who are engaged in daily spiritual activities such as prayers, Mass, and adoration. The sisters, including a trained nurse, administer medication and provide necessary care, ensuring that the residents feel comfortable and at home. The sisters also visit local families weekly to offer prayers and support.
The Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima continue to carry out their mission of bringing Jesus' compassion and healing to those in need, living a life of service and prayer.
